“My own exposure to the alchemy of theatre at an independent school changed my life. Performing helped me discover my agency as a storyteller and as a citizen. I look forward to helping a new generation of young artists discover the boundlessness of their creativity.”

In 2023, Amara Aja joined Poly’s Performing Arts Department as an Upper School Drama Teacher. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York by way of Montreal, Amara earned a B.A. in Government with a minor in Africana Studies at Cornell University and a Master’s of Fine Arts from the University of San Diego/Old Globe Shiley Graduate Theatre Program.

Amara’s career as a teacher has taken him from New York State correctional facilities, to Title I public schools in Brooklyn and the Bronx, to the Powerhouse Training Program at Vassar College. As an actor, Amara has appeared on television and onstage in New York and around the country. When not acting or teaching, Amara is an avid reader of speculative fiction.
